Sažetak:Presents 2 competing models of psychotherapy--the medical model, which focuses on the specificity of treatments, and the contextual model, which emphasizes the commonality among therapies. Research on psychotherapy is reviewed, and the commonly held view that the benefits of psychotherapy are derived from the specific ingredients contained in a given treatment is disputed. The author reviews the literature related to the absolute efficacy of psychotherapy, relative efficacy of various treatments, specificity of ingredients contained in established therapies, effects due to common factors such as the working alliance, adherence and allegiance to the therapeutic protocol, and effects that are produced by different therapists. It is argued that in each case, the evidence convincingly corroborates the contextual model and disconfirms the prevailing medical model. Implications of accepting the contextual model and rejecting the medical model are discussed.
